TSM announced that one of its longest-running Apex Legends players, Jordan ‘Reps‘ Wolfe, will be parting ways with the esports organisation.

Reps, a TSM staple since Apex Legends’ early days, is departing just shy of his sixth anniversary with the team.

The announcement was made on X by the organisation, which included a short montage of Reps best moments in his Apex journey.

It said: “The rock, the pillar, the OG. It’s bittersweet to part ways with one of the greatest players of all time. From X Games to Champs, you won it all with the black-and-white. We can’t thank you enough for making history with us time and time again.”

Reps is the last of TSM’s iconic ALGS team to leave. Evan ‘Verhulst’ Verhulst also left TSM recently, and before him both Phillip ‘ImperialHal‘ Dosen and coach Elias ‘raven’ Ghribi also departed.

This means that the organisation’s original ALGS line-up has left. TSM currently has no signed Apex players, meaning it’s unlikely to compete at ALGS Year 5.

Reps first joined the organisation in June 2019 shortly after Apex Legends first launched. Since then, he’s won over $650,000 (~£503,000) in prize pool money.

2023 saw Reps at his prime, the year where he won several major titles. Many consider ALGS Year 3 to be the peak of his esports career, claiming first in multiple LANS alongside ImperialHal and Verhulst with Raven’s coaching.

The unstoppable trio helped cement TSM’s dominance in the early seasons of ALGS and other Apex leagues, such as the X Games Invitational.

Where Reps will permanently go from here is anyone’s guess, but it’s clear that he’s not leaving the Apex scene any time soon. A post on X shared how Reps would be playing with Dominic ‘Deeds‘ Peranio and Alan ‘Vaxlon‘ Gonzalez in what could be the biggest year for ALGS yet.

Deeds said: “Teaming up with Reps and Vaxlon for ALGS Open and Year 5 Pro League. Let’s get to work fellas.”

While Electronic Arts (EA) is paying for Apex Legends esports players to travel for this year’s ALGS Open, players are now expected to self-fund for their hotel stay.

This revelation has sparked a backlash from both pro players and the community, but EA is adamant that this decision will keep the event ‘equitable.’

This year’s AGLS is set to be the biggest one yet, with over 160 teams flying in to compete on the highest level of Apex Legends esports.

In previous years, Apex Legends publisher EA covered both travel and hotel accommodations for teams. The organisation would provide two rooms, which would be shared between three players and a coach.

However, this year EA is rolling back parts of that hospitality due to the increased size of the event. It’s ditching accommodations and focusing on travel instead, ensuring players actually make it to AGLS no matter where they’re geographically located.

In comments shared with esports.gg, a spokesperson from EA said: “By covering airfare for all qualified teams, we’re providing a level playing field for players to compete, no matter where in the world they come from or how expensive their travel would be.

“Airfare typically has fewer options available, whereas there are a variety of accommodation options players can leverage depending on their budget.”

EA has shared that it will be taking steps to ensure booking accommodation is smooth for players, including notifying hotels in the area, providing discount codes, and releasing a travel guide with visa requirements.

Not everyone is thrilled with EA’s revised plan. Some Apex Legends esports players see it as a necessary trade-off for a bigger tournament, while others slam the last-minute radical change.

A post on X by Jake Lucky highlighted some of the Apex pros reactions to the announcement.

John ‘Hakis‘ Håkansson, a Swedish player for Alliance, said: “It’s 2025 and this could have so easily been solved by just doing a designated skin bundle or merchandise for the Open LAN, which would have crowdfunded all the travel, accommodation and then some for the 160 team open LAN. “

Casper ‘Gnaske‘ Præstensgaard, a Danish player for Ninjas in Pyjamas, shared a similar sentiment adding that pro skin bundles would be ‘revolutionary for the esport.’

Others are more sympathetic, understanding EA’s rollback while still welcoming the chance to compete.

Top player Phillip ‘ImperialHal‘ Dosen said: “3/4 months to make money for the trip, for all these people that is a dream come true for them. They just expect handouts because that’s what was given before this entire time.”

The Apex Legends esports scene has been around for some time now, with AGLS holding its inaugural season from May 22nd to June 13th, 2021. Now, 2025 is looking to be the biggest event yet, set to be almost double the size of what it was last year.

Ben ‘Wxltzy‘ Walton, an Australian player for the Falcons, said: “Those complaining need to just not compete [in my opinion]. If you think you won’t earn more than what [accommodation] costs then why are you going?”

Noctem Esports announced on X that it’s shutting down for good “with immediate effect,” leaving its current teams in search of new organisations to sign with.

The UK esports organisation has been active for the past two years, competing in both Apex Legends and Call of Duty leagues.

The news was shared by the official Noctem account on X on March 3rd, 2025. It said: “A sad day today, as we’ve made the incredibly difficult decision to cease Noctem’s operations with immediate effect.

“For two years, we gave everything to build something special, and to take the brand to where we needed and wanted it to be Unfortunately, we couldn’t make that happen. But what a ride it’s been. Four world finals appearances, four esports, millions of views. An incredible and dedicated content team.”

Noctem concluded that it’s been ‘one hell of a journey,’ and even felt hopeful that the organisation could return one day.

In light of its success and victories over the past two years, the announcement of Noctem’s closure came as a surprise to many esports players online.

Marco ‘Stallion‘ Galluzo, a streamer for Fnatic, said: “Can’t believe this, thought you’d made some huge moves over the last two years as well. Wish all the best for everyone who was involved.”

Stingzy is a content creator and was a former member of Noctem Esports before leaving on February 26, 2025. In response to the announcement, he said: “It’s really sad to see this. I loved my time here, and [I’m] sad to see it end!”

Noctem Esports was first established on March 19, 2023 by Jack Stovell, former FIFA competitor for Dignitas back in 2009.

One of its most recent achievements was in the Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS) 2024 Championship, securing 18th place and earning $20,000 in prize money.

Noctem faced a rough start to 2025 after it could not land a sponsor for Apex Champs.

“Apex Champs is just over a week away,” Stovell said on X at the time, “and we’ve had it confirmed our last sponsor opportunity isn’t happening. Esports is hard, we’ve had a lot fall through in the last five months, and although I’m always optimistic – It’s been a challenge recently.”

The challenges that followed would eventually lead to Noctem letting go of it’s Apex Legends team. This included Mohsin ‘mohziin’ Khan, and Max ‘RemixPowers’ Creamer. Thomaz ‘Atinum’ Ferreira Brasil transferred to GoNext Esports on February 23rd, 2025.

Esports has a vast ecosystem that spans across a variety of games, each with its own unique structures and calendars. As such, fans of multiple esports are treated to major tournaments and events throughout the entirety of the year.

To help navigate esports’ hectic calendar, Esports Insider has created a month-by-month list of events that are taking place in 2025. These competitions range from annual World Championships to major leagues that cover entire regions.

League of Legends and VALORANT kick off esports’ competitive calendar with their international respective leagues all commencing. However, the first month of 2025 also concludes Apex Legends’ latest season as the 2024 ALGS Championship heads to Japan.

February sees some of the best teams across Rainbow Six Siege, VALORANT and Counter-Strike 2 collide with the Six Invitational 2025, VALORANT Masters Bangkok 2025 and PGL Cluj-Napoca 2025 all taking place, respectively. Meanwhile, Fortnite’s esports ecosystem takes centre stage across the world with its online Major 1 Grand Finals.

League of Legends’ esports ecosystem will debut its new tournament, First Stand, in March. Meanwhile, Capcom Cup 11, Street Fighter 6’s biggest event of the year, and Rocket League’s RLCS 2025 Birmingham Major stand out within a very busy month in esports.

Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2 largely dominate April 2025, with the likes of PGL Bucharest, BLAST Rivals Spring 2025, IEM Spring, ESL One Raleigh and PGL Wallachia Season 4 all starting in the month. Call of Duty League’s Stage 3 Major and ESL Snapdragon Pro Series: Mobile Masters 2025 are other stand-out events in April.

Counter-Strike 2 continues to dominate the 2025 esports calendar with four significant events happening in May alone. Notably, this includes ESL Impact League Season 7, Counter-Strike 2’s women’s-only esports competition.

June is jam-packed with international events. VALORANT, Counter-Strike, Rocket League and League of Legends will host notable global competitions to find the best teams in their respective games at 2025’s mid-way point.

July marks the start of the 2025 Esports World Cup, a multi-title esports tournament in Saudi Arabia. As such, a range of major esports events will be scheduled throughout the month. As of right now, the biggest events announced are the PUBG Mobile World Cup 2025 and its new Chess competition.

Alongside the continuation of the Esports World Cup, August will see titles such as Pokemon UNITE and GeoGuessr conclude their respective esports ecosystems.

September sees various Counter-Strike 2 competitions commence, including the ESL Pro League and the StarLadder StarSeries. However, headlining this month is the RLCS 2025 World Championship, which has yet to reveal its location.

So far, very little has been announced for October. However, the 2025 League of Legends World Championship, one of esports’ biggest events of the year, is set to be held in China with PGL hosting another significant Counter-Strike 2 tournament in Serbia.

November sees the conclusion of PUBG Mobile’s esports ecosystem, whilst Rainbow Six, Dota 2 and Counter-Strike 2 all host notable competitions.

Earlier this month, Apex Legends wrapped up its fourth competitive year at the ALGS Championship in Sapporo, Japan with underdogs GoNext Esports bringing home the trophy and $600,000 (~£482,800) in prize money. 

The event, which took place at the sold-out Daiwa House Premist Dome, lasted for five days and exceeded over 30,000 tickets sold. Moreover, this year’s finals broke the record for most tickets sold for a single day in Apex Legends, beating the Year 4 Split One Playoffs. 

Esports Insider went to Sapporo for the ALGS Championship to speak with the competition’s organisers and witness firsthand what they claimed to be their biggest event yet.

The ALGS Year 4 Championship marked the close of “the most global year in Apex Legends’ history,” according to Jasmine Chiang, Apex Legends Esports’ Global Brand Marketing Lead.

Year 4, which took place across 2024 and 2025, saw Split 1 held in the US in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Split 2 headed to Mannheim, Germany with the ALGS finishing its tour in Japan.

Interestingly, the event took place just before one of the country’s busiest tourist events: the Snow Festival of Sapporo.

Year 4 of the ALGS was a time for expansion in the Apex Legends esports scene. In October, the BLGS (an open tournament) became the largest online tournament in the history of Apex Legends esports, an indication that there is a blossoming ecosystem. 

The location of the ALGS Championship is also an example of the game’s expansion. Japan has become one of the biggest markets for EA’s battle royale with a growing audience of players and pros. As such, it only made sense for the competition to head to Japan for the first time in its history. 

“We set the bar really high for this year’s finale,” John Nelson, Senior Director of Esports at EA Entertainment, told Esports Insider.

“We have branding in Shibuya (Tokyo) and all over Sapporo, we built the biggest fan zone ever and partnered with a rock band called SiM to make our first-ever opening ceremony performance and our first-ever anthem.”

For the first time in four years, the competition’s map pool was expanded to a third map — the newly released E-District — setting off a trend that the organisers hope will continue. “We had World’s Edge and Storm Point for three years, it was time for a change,” Nelson stated. “ We hope to continue this trend for future competitions.”

Outside of the tense action that occurred in the arena, it is also important to create a sense of occasion when attending an esports event live. As such, a major part of this year’s ALGS Championship was the Fan Zone.

Introduced last year, Sapporo got its biggest implementation yet. In this area there were free gadget giveaways, meet and greet opportunities with players, sponsor activations (Red Bull and Sony both had booths), a free play area with 60 seats, team booths and even a merch shop.

“We wanted to blow out the fan experience this year,” said Apex Legends Esports’ Global Brand Marketing Lead.

“We built our biggest fan zone yet with space for 16 team booths. After the very strong feedback from last year’s ALGS in Birmingham, we expanded on the team booths and the results are showing.” 

Over the last three days of the competition, almost every team booth (those representing teams with Japanese rosters like Fnatic in particular) generated long queues of people waiting to buy something or participate in activities.

A lot has changed during Year 4 of the ALGS on the streaming side as well. After being the broadcast partner of the circuit for years, ESL FACEIT Group got to integrate the competition into FACEIT Watch, which has one feature that EA believes is key for the future of competitive battle royales.

Nelson explained: “They [ESL FACEIT Group] have been providing a multi-view product since the start of Year 4. By the Split 2 Playoffs, the feature was in a great state and captivated a high percentage of viewership on that event.

“I’m a strong believer in the essentiality of multi-view for battle royale esports consumption: if you are supporting a specific team, for example, the singular broadcast may give just glimpses of them. The multi-view allows you to follow who you want to follow, something key for this kind of competition.”

When speaking to many attendees before and after the ALGS finals, one thing became clear. A major factor in fan enjoyment of Apex Legends esports is the Match Point format. 

Designed by Nelson himself, this format awards the trophy in the finals to the team that wins a map after reaching a threshold of points through their performance in the series. This means no officials counting scores at the end of a set amount of games, or even a guarantee of how many maps will be played. 

Whoever wins the decisive game brings home the trophy. This creates palpable tension in the arena that explodes at every important elimination. By the final map, nine out of 20 organisations hit the 50-point threshold and were in with a chance of taking home the victory.

Alliance scored two second-place finishes in a bid to reach the title before the underdogs, GoNext Esports, secured the crucial map win for the EMEA region. 

“I think the magic of the Match Point system lies in the fact that, in the last moments of every game, 90% of the arena is cheering for the team that’s not slated to win the whole thing so that the competition keeps going,” Nelson highlighted. 

The ALGS Year 4 Championship managed to deliver on the promised excitement despite having one of the most defensive and passive metagames on record with Gibraltar and Newcastle being the most utilised Legends of the tournament.

After GoNext Esports lifted the trophy, the organisers took to the stage to announce big news for the 2025 calendar: the addition of a LAN open tournament. 

Called the ALGS Open, this competition will feature 160 teams from all around the world: “Every pro league team in the world will be invited, plus another 40 teams.” Chiang told Esports Insider.

“It’s going to be a great opportunity for semi-pro and amateur trios to make it big.”

For Nelson, the event is going to be a callback to the very roots of esports: “It’s going to be like the Major League Gaming events or the EVOs of old. Gigantic LAN parties to make friends, compete and feel welcome,” he said.

“A lot of competitions feel very exclusive nowadays with 20 teams or 8 players invited: we wanted to create an event where aspiring pros could get their first LAN experience, and the fans could discover new teams and talents.” 

Now on the cusp of its fifth anniversary, Apex Legends is showing no signs of battle royale fatigue. Whilst the Japanese time zone affected ALGS’ overall viewership, the event still managed to bring in over 540,000 peak viewers.

With Legend bans being implemented in Year 5, alongside other format changes, and EA looking to invest in its grassroots scene with the ALGS Open, the future does seem bright for the battle royale title. 

The Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS) has revealed major format changes in its roadmap for its Year 5 esports ecosystem.

The changes will affect the series’ tournament structure, points system, map pool and prize money distribution.

The 2025 competitive calendar will consist of the ALGS Pro League as well as three offline tournaments: the ALGS Open, the Midseason Playoffs and the 2025 Championship.

The ALGS Open, the calendar’s first LAN event, will feature an updated format, a double-elimination bracket and a $1m (~£810,000) prize pool. Moreover, the competition will invite an unprecedented 160 competitors which includes all 120 ALGS Pro League teams and an additional 40 teams from the Preseason Qualifier.

As usual, the Pro League is divided into two splits, with 30 teams competing in each region. However, the North and South American regions have been consolidated to form the Americas. As a result, the ALGS Pro League now consists of the Americas, EMEA, APAC North and APAC South regions.

Throughout the 2025 season, the goal is still to earn points to climb the leaderboard and qualify for global offline events.

However, Playoff Points have now been rebranded into Championship Points with these points now belonging to the player rather than the team. Points may be collected through the Pro League, ALGS Open and Midseason Playoffs.

In addition, Pro League Points in the Regional Finals have been buffed to account for the increased difficulty in these matches. The exact increase has yet to be revealed.

The ALGS also made adjustments to the distribution of its $5m (~£4m) total prize pool. While only the top 20 teams were eligible for LAN event payouts in previous years, prize distribution will include the top 30 rosters at the Midseason Playoffs and Championship. The ALGS Open will award the top 40 teams with prize money.

Finally, the upcoming ALGS season will see several new features that will affect the way matches are played. To allow more amateur teams to compete under Pro League conditions, POI Drafting will be introduced to the Pro League Qualifier and Last Chance Qualifier.

The map pool will also be updated to include Broken Moon in addition to World’s Edge, Storm Point and E-District. However, Broken Moon and E-District will only debut after the Preseason Qualifiern, allowing teams to prepare for the new additions.

The updated rules will also introduce Legend Bans to the Pro League, Pro League Qualifier, Last Chance Qualifier and all LAN events. Starting with every legend available, the legend picked by the most teams will be removed from the legend pool after each match for the remainder of the series. If an entire class of legends is removed from the legend pool, the longest-banned legend will become available again.

With the 2024 Championship concluding on February 2nd, the ALGS is already looking to kick off the 2025 competitive season. Eligible players may now register for the Preseason Qualifier, which commences on February 22nd and offers qualification to the season’s first LAN event.

European esports organisation GoNext Esports has won the ALGS Year 4 Championship, Apex Legends’ biggest event of the year. 

Taking place in Sapporo, Japan, the EMEA representative secured an unlikely underdog victory at the Daiwa House PREMIST DOME following a tense nine-map Grand Finals. 

After securing a map victory in game seven, GoNext Esports hit the fifty-point threshold, meaning that the team only needed one more map win to secure the championship. This happened in a dramatic game nine, which saw GoNext Esports ultimately topple Luminosity Gaming, which was also on match point, and Virtus.Pro.

Coming into the competition, GoNext Esports — which consisted of ex-2R1C players Jose ‘Uxako’ Llosa, Filipe ‘Hiarka’ Morgado and Kyllian ‘zhidan’ Brun — were ranked 29th in the ALGS Global Rankings. 

After winning two maps in the Group Stage, the European organisation secured a respectable seventh-placed finish. The team’s momentum also carried on in the bracket stage, with GoNext coming out of the Winner’s Bracket in joint eighth thanks to a map victory in game seven out of eight. 

Whilst GoNext Esports ultimately won the ALGS Year 4 Championship, yesterday’s Grand Finals saw nearly half of the 20 participants be in contention to clinch the trophy by game nine. With nine organisations hitting the 50-point threshold, it was Team Falcons and Alliance who were the first to hit Match Point in map five. 

From maps six to nine, the likes of Shopify Rebellion, Complexity, Luminosity Gaming, FURIA Esports, VK Gaming and Fnatic all hit 50 points, resulting in an incredibly tense last two matches. 

Taking second place in the ALGS Year 4 Championship is Swedish organisation Alliance. The roster, which topped the Group Stage earlier in the competition, where incredibly close to taking home the trophy with two consecutive second-place finishes in maps six and seven. Ultimately, the EMEA representative ended the competition with an impressive 95 points. 

GoNext Esports, on the other hand, ended the Match Point Finals with 68 points, less than three other teams in the series. 

Taking third place is Team Falcons (75 points), with Shopfy Rebellion (72) and Virtus.Pro (65) rounding out the top five in fourth and fifth, respectively. 

As a result of GoNext Epsorts’ triumph, the organisation is walking away with $600,000 (~£487,200) in prize money. 

Earlier today, the ALGS Year 4 Championship eliminated its first set of teams from the competition, with FaZe Clan and Team Burger narrowly avoiding elimination.

Following eight games in the Elimination Bracket Round 1, FaZe Clan’s victory on map five and a fourth-placed result on map one was enough to secure the team a ninth-placed finish overall (42 points).

APAC North’s Team Burger left their qualification late, securing a third-place finish on map eight which tied the organisation with 11th-placed team NRG on 41 points.

However, due to tie-breaker rules, it was Team Burger that qualified for the Elimination Bracket Round 2.

Also missing out on the next stage are Ninjas in Pyjamas (40 points), Source Gaming (37) and Supernova (36), even though the latter team secured a victory on map two.

Topping the bracket was Orgless and Hungry with 96 points and two map wins. The EMEA side dramatically improved from its 36th-placed Group Stage performance, securing notable wins in maps one and eight. 

Also turning around their fortunes from yesterday were Luminosity and ENVY, with both sides qualifying for the next stage in second (70 points) and seventh (53 points), respectively.

The remaining Elimination Bracket Round 1 map winners included Zero Tenacity (map three), VK Gaming (map four), Dragons Esports (map six) and Disguised (map seven). All of the map winners aside from Supernova have qualified for the next stage. 

The final team to qualify for the Elimination Bracket Round 2 was GHS Professional, finishing third overall in the eight-game series (66 points). 

The full list of eliminated teams from 11th to 20th is: NRG, Ninjas in Pyjamas, Source Gaming, Supernova, DreamFire, Oblivion, REIGNITE, shadow3690, Stallions and Meteor.

Tomorrow (February 1st) the ALGS Year 4 Championship Winners Bracket and Elimination Bracket Round 2 will take place. With all action occurring at the Daiwa House PREMIST DOME in Japan, the competition will resume at 11 AM JST (2 AM GMT) on ALGS’ Twitch and YouTube channels.

Swedish esports organisation Alliance has placed first in the ALGS Year 4 Championship Group Stage.

Taking place in Sapporo, Japan at the Daiwa House PREMIST DOME, Alliance secured an impressive 162 points in the competition’s first stage. The EMEA representative narrowly beat APAC North’s Fnatic and North America’s Shopify Rebellion, with both sides recording 160 points. 

Taking place over the last two days, 40 Apex Legends teams have competed in 18 games in an attempt to qualify for the Winners Bracket. Perhaps the two biggest organisations to fail to make it to the Winners Bracket were Luminosity and ENVY, with the two NA representatives securing 35th and 21st, respectively.

Narrowly missing out on the Winners Bracket, the newly revived ENVY entered into the Apex Legends scene very recently after acquiring a roster that previously competed under BLEED Esports. 

The roster rose to 13th in the ALGS standings following a seventh-placed finish in the Split 2 Playoffs. Meanwhile, Luminosity Gaming was 12th in the ALGS rankings. 

As a result, both organisations will be placed in the Elimination Bracket Round 1 alongside 18 other teams. 

Across the two days, there were 21 map winners in the Group Stage. However, topping the chart was Fnatic and EMEA’s Noctem Esports, with both teams securing four victories. These teams were followed by Aurora Gaming and Gamin Gladiators (three), with Alliance securing two map wins.

Despite not securing a map victory, Team Falcons’ consistency managed to secure the organisation a fourth-place finish in the Group Stage.

ALGS Year 4 Championship action will continue tomorrow (January 31st) with the Elimination Bracket Round 1, which will see 10 teams be eliminated from the competition. 

Taking place at 12 PM JST (3 AM GMT), the likes of Disguised, FaZe Clan, Ninjas in Pyjamas and NRG will all fight for survival. The Winner’s Bracket will take place on February 1st at 11 AM JST (2 AM GMT), with all ALGS action broadcast live on Twitch and YouTube.

Popular Japanese band SiM will perform Apex Legends Global Series’ (ALGS) first-ever official anthem at the ALGS Year 4 Championship.

Called ‘CHAMPiONS’, this is the first time Apex Legends esports has released a dedicated song accompanying a tournament.

SiM, a Japanese alternative metal band will premier the anthem during the ALGS Year 4 Championship on February 1st at the Daiwa House PREMIST DOME, in Sapporo, Japan

Alongside creating songs for the ALGS, SiM has released several notable tracks including Under the Tree and The Rumbling from the popular anime series Attack on Titan.

The song also coincides with ALGS hosting a tournament in Japan, one of the title’s most popular markets, for the first time.

According to a release, the anthem ‘taps the band’s passion for Apex Legends’ in the form of a ‘high-octane song’ for fans of the band and the game to enjoy.

Esports is no stranger to collaborating with music artists to create songs for events. In 2024, Riot Games joined forces with Linkin Park to perform the League of Legends World Championship anthem. For VALORANT Champions 2024, K-pop artists KISS OF LIFE and Mark Tuan (Got7) released an official anthem called SUPERPOWER.

Outside of esports events, organisations such as Team Liquid (Turn The Tide) and Team Vitality (Metality) have collaborated with artists to create dedicated songs supporting their teams.

The ALGS Year 4 Championship is the season-ending tournament for the 2024 Apex Legends season. Taking place from January 29th until February 2nd, 40 teams from across the world will compete to be crowned world champion and win a lion’s share of its $2m (~£1.6m) prize pool.

The tournament also marks the return of North American organisation Team Envy to esports after former owner Mike ‘Hastr0’ Rufail reacquired the brand from OpTic Gaming.
